Audio Systems: Toyota pickup add on CD player, pin din plug, toyota pickup

Question
I have a 1992 Toyota pickup with a stock AM/FM
radio. I would like to add a stock type CD player.
The radio is marked A51201 on the face and is a
model 86100-04010 by Matsushita USA. It has a 13
pin DIN jack on the back.

Recently I picked up a Toyota CD deck 34203, model
08601-00804 by Fujitsu Ten Limited, as is, on
eBay. It has the 13 pin DIN plug and was used in
early 90's pickups with a radio that looks almost
identical to mine. I have not been to the dealer
yet to see if they are compatible.

The deck has a slide switch on the side marked
P and D. I have connected the two units and with
the switch in the D position all functions appear
normal. i.e. unit lights up when disc is inserted,
track indicator and controlls all work, when CD
button is pushed the radio audio is turned off.
The only thing is there is no audio output from
the CD player.

Do you know if these units are indeed compatible.
If they are, do I have an audio problem in the
deck? CD seems to be tracking, ejecting, etc.
with no problems. CD lens looks OK but I have not
tried to clean it.

I checked a couple of web sites of repair shops.
One specifically said it no longer works on this
model. The other did not exclude any models but
wants $120.00 flat fee to fix. Any suggestions.
I would prefer a factory unit and will probably
not bother if I can't get it to work. I am
more than willing to pay for repairs but $120.00
seems excessive. Any suggestions would be
appreciated.

Thanks

Answer
Jeff,
If the CD player shows the track and the indicator is moving the laser lens is OK and the CD mech may be OK, the problem may be that the audio isn't getting to the head unit. The problem could also be that the audio from the CD unit is getting to the head unit, but the switching circuits in the head unit isn't switching the CD audio to come through the speakers. A bench check of the CD player should confirm if the CD player is or isn't working correctly. being that you purchased the CD player off ebay, it is very likely that the CD player is defective.
