Audio Systems: either/or, yamaha htr 5730, sony strde597

Question
hello again kevin. down to the wire, the yamaha htr-5730[5.1] or sony strde597[6.1],both 100watts per.5.1/6.1 doesn't matter.both the same price.thanks also for previous response. perry

Answer
Dear Perry,

The Sony because it will decode Dolby Digital EX. EX feeds the rear channels in 6.1. Since the Yamaha has only 5.1 capability, it won't decode EX, defaulting to Dolby Digital. The Sony outputs more power per channel: 100 vs. 70. Double check the power rating on the Yamaha. My source (Sound and Vision Magazine Buyer's Guide 2005) sez the Yamaha has "only" 70 watts per channel. The Sony also has more line level (CD, DVD, tuner, etc.) inputs than the Yamaha (5 vs. 2).

On features alone, the Sony gets my vote.

Have a great time with your new stuff!

Kindest regards,

Kevin
