Audio Systems: Kenwood excel flip-face car stereo, ribbon cables, ribbon cable

Question
I had a Kenwood Excel kdc-x717 cd/stereo installed in my '96 Mustang after the factory tape/radio was stolen. The unit is about 4 years old & the problem is that the face flips up into the play position when I start the car, as it's supposed to, but then flips to an insert cd position and just stays there. The radio never comes on, even though it has power to flip the face. It will sometimes close back up when the ignition is turned off. The fuse at the back of the unit is intact. Any ideas? Is it worth taking in to be repaired/

Thanks

Answer
Dennis,
I can tell you by my experience of repairing these units that the ribbon cable that connects the face plate holder assembly to the main circuit board is defective! The ribbon cable when the face plate moves is flexed so much that the very small flat conductors in it will break. I have replaced at least 10 of these ribbon cables over the last few months.
