Audio Systems: Volvo radio, volvo 240 dl, zoominternet net

Question
Yes, all the factory connectors are still in the dash and the model number of my radio is...

AIWA(brand)
CDC-X504MP(model)

What kind of adapter would I need?  It sounds easier than the bypass :)

Question -
I have a volvo 240 DL 1987.
It did not come with a radio however it seemed that all wires were there...
When I bought my new radio the technician said that I would need to bypass the amplifier in order for it to work.  I am fairly knowledgeable in electronics but I'm not sure how or why exactly I would have to do this.

If you could clarify this it would be very useful.  Thanks alot.

Daniel,
Depending on the make and model of the replacement stereo you may be able to use the existing factory amp by using the proper adapter. Two questions, first, do you see that the factory connector/s are still in the dash for the factory stereo? second, Can you give me the complete model number and make of the new stereo that you would like to install? You could bypass the amp, however it does require some experience and the wiring diagram of the stereo system.

Answer
Daniel,
Most good car stereo install shops should be able to supply you with the correct adapter connectors. The connectors will plug onto the factory connector/s and they have wire pig tails on them that you connect the wires from the new stereo onto according to the markings on the wires. If the new stereo uses low level RCA outputs you will need the cables for those outputs to attach to the adapter connector/s for sound to pass to the factory amp. Lastly, if the new stereo does not have  RCA outputs but rather speaker level outputs you will need a high level to low level adapter and once again a good stereo shop should have what you need.
