Audio Systems: 96 town car cd changer, car cd changer, alignment laser

Question
Tom,
I did a manual cleaning and it still did not work.   I went and bought a new lens cleaner and tried that.  As the changer was going through the cds it started playing but not on the lens cleaner, so I skipped to the lens cleaner.  It started playing but then stopped.  I am still trying to get it going again.  Do you think the problem could be something other than the lens being dirty?  Thanks for you help.

My disc changer will load the cd's, but will not spin.  It just stopped working a month or so ago.  It reads all cd's as bad cds.  I took the changer apart and plugged it back in.  It loads the cd's fine, but will not spin them.  If you can provide me with any info on this problem, it will be greatly appreciated.

Jonathan,
Most likely the laser lens is dirty, try doing a manual cleaning of the laser lens with a Qtip dampened with rubbing alcohol. Gently rub the laser lens to clean it to see if this helps.

Answer
Jonathan,
You may want to use a magnifier to take a close up look at the lens. Look for any smudge marks or scratches. If you look real close you may even see dust/dirt on the bottom side of the lens. If this is the case the laser pickup will need to be replaced. Other things that can cause the unit not to play correctly are, weak laser or out of alignment laser and in some cases the worm drive can have dust/dirt in it causing the laser tracking to (basically) jump tracks and quit.
