Audio Systems: Chrysler CD Player Loading Problem, cd optics, photo transistors

Question
Hi, thanks in advance for any hope you might be able to lend.

I have a late 90's / early 2000's Chysler (infinity?) am/fm/cassette/single cd player in my 2000 Dodge Durango. (MODEL P047043831B) It has been out of warranty for quite some time.

It has failed twice before, and I've have spent nearly $300 in repair bills.

Here's the problem: CD player will not accept (load) a CD. Additionally, when I start the car (give initial power to the car / stereo unit), I hear the sound of a motor activating for a couple of seconds, and then it stops.  The sound seems to come from the CD player portion of the stereo unit, and has only made the sound when the unit experiences this problems (this is now the third instance of this same problem).
I've had the problem reparied professionally twice before during the last 3 years, and spent a load of money on it. On a repair receipt slip I found in my files, the work performed shows "Remove and Replace CD Position Detect Switch. Clean CD optics."  I'm pretty handy, and would like to entertain the idea of maybe trying to open up the unit and fix it myself, especially if the needed parts are easily obtainable. What do I really have to lose? --consdiering that there's no way I'll ever pay someone else to fix it again -- I'd rather just buy a new or new-used one on eBay.

THANKS A TON!

Answer
Charles,
The part that was replaced was a photo transistor that looks for a reflection off the CD from LED next to it. When you insert a CD, the photo transistor will activate due to being illuminated by the LED and in turn the load motor will turn on to load the CD onto the spindle motor. These very small photo transistors must be replaced with one that can handle slightly more current than the original part. Most likely the photo transistor is shorted out again because the load motor is getting a load signal with no CD inserted! Please contact me by direct Email for more details about the replacement parts.
