Audio Systems: Right channel only comes on if you crank up volume, lincoln continental, stereo decoder

Question
95 Lincoln Continental, factory installed stereo
The left channel always works, but the right channel is normally out.  If you crank up the volume it will come on, and then stay on for a while - even when you turn the volume back down to normal.  More recently, that trick won't keep it on too long.  Problem seems to only be when listening to FM.  When listening to CDs, both channels work right.  Is there any chance to save it?  Replacing it won't be cheap.

Answer
Dale,
It's hard to say what may be the exact cause of the problem, however it sounds like a possible stereo decoder fault. When you turn up the volume when listening to the FM stereo and the right channel starts working, it may be due to the audio system drawing more current and shocking the decoder section into working on both channels?
