Hi Tom,  I have a 99 Taurus with factory changer in the trunk.  When I bought it, the magazine was stuffed in upside down AND backwards.  I dissassembled and carefully removed it.  Seemed to work fine afterward.  When the colder weather set in, it started skipping. (perhaps coincidence, but seems to play better in the warmer months!)  I've removed it to see if I can blow some air into it and clean out any particles that may be trapped.  We have an oven for baking electronics so I can put into that at about 100F and see if it takes out any possible moisture...any suggestions?  The discs are all fine, however some are PC burned backups...I've never noticed that originals v backups(copies made on PC) made a difference.  Also, If it can be fixed, I'd really like another magazine or 2!  Thanks in advance!!

Joe,
A few things to check out, first clean and lub the moving parts with moly grease. DO NOT spray any kind of a lub oil into the changer. Pay attention to the worm drive that moves the laser pick up assembly, any dried up grease or dust/dirt on it will make the CD skip! NOTE, Don't blow air into the changer or you risk damaging the fragile pick up assembly. You also may want to use a Qtip dampened with rubbing alcohol and gently rub the lens to clean off any dust or dirt on it. If you give me all the numbers off the changer I can look up who actually built this changer. In many of the Ford changers a Kenwood or Pioneer magazine will fit.

FOLLOW UP:  Tom, I'm not sure where to buy MOLY grease...perhaps it goes by another name?  Radio Shack and Napa were of no help.  What's the best to use to remove the old grease from the screws?  I used rubbing alcohol on a qtip.  Not sure that I got them as clean as I should.
Thanks for all the help!  Joe

Answer
Joe,
Most good electronics supply outlets should have the black moly grease( Molytone grease)This grease is widely used on VCR decks. As for cleaning the mechanics that move the laser assembly, a spray degreaser will work. If you do use the degreaser, make sure to place paper towels around the laser to soak up the excess spray. Also, don't spray the degreaser into the area where the lens in housed.
