Audio Systems: Can I connect a DVD player to my 1986 TV-- which only has a Coaxial Input--without using an RF Modulator?, coby dvd player, coby dvd players

Question
Can I connect a DVD player to my 1986 TV-- which only has a Coaxial Input--without using an RF Modulator?

1]Either via my VCR? My VCR has a Coaxial Output.

2]or from the Coaxial Output of a DVD player to the TV? [I saw a Coaxial Output in the manual of a Coby DVD player I'm thinking of buying.]

P.S.:I don't yet own a DVD player.

Answer
Dear Roark,

The coaxial input on your 1986 TV is an analog 75 ohm antenna input. The coaxial output on the DVD player is more than likely a digital audio signal. Simply said: the connection wouldn't work. However, if the coaxial connection is, like with a VCR, a analog coaxial throughput, the connection would probably work.

I've looked at a few Coby DVD players on line and can't find any with technical specifications or even a pic of the rear panel. So I don't know what that coaxial connection is on the Coby player.

Yes, routing your DVD player's video feed through your VCR is an option because the coxial input and output on your VCR are antenna leads. However, how would you input the DVD player's output to the VCR? Does it have an RCA video input (generally yellow)? If so, then you're in business. Don't forget to also connect the audio.

If all that fails, then my opinion is that you should leap into the 21st century with an updated (doesn't have to be fancy) TV and an A/V receiver (as low as $200 from Sony) to do justice to the movies that come out on DVD. If you decide to go that way, let me know, and I can work on it with you.

I can't think of any reason to use an RF modulator in this application.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!
