Audio Systems: volvo 740 turbo stereo 1992 very low sound, lifetime gaurantee, volvo 740

Question
I just received code from dealer for 1992 volvo turbo wagon. Dealer put in code put stereo back in and radio stations came on but very , very low sound out of speakers. dealer said he had no time to check it out and tried to tell me it worked, when clearly it doesnt. is there anything i can do or do i need a new system? any help would be appreciated!

Answer
The fact that the system is 14 years old is notable for this issue. In my opinion, that alone means the system is more than ready for repair or replacement.
He must have certainly had little time to deal with you to have said it sounds fine (while he knows better). I am very suprised that Volvos 'safety' ends where your radio is concerned (see below).

If the sound is extremely faint (and can only be heard faintly when the volume is all the way up) the system may need repair to its' power amplifier. But at this age, repair is unlikely to be a good resolve due to the age of the rest of the components which may break or fail the very next day.

I would suggest making an appointment at the dealer to have it inspected more closely as soon as possible (in case it is something that could into a real danger on the road from fire, smoke or other REAL electrical hazards).
The problem may turn out to be a simple setting within the system itself since it has been 'reset'...but if the dealer says it actually needs repair, I would take it to a reputable after-market stereo shop (not best buy or circuit city) for a second opinion and/or possible replacement of the system including head unit and speakers which would have a lifetime gaurantee on its' wiring.

I hope this helps you in some way.
Good luck and thank you for the question.

Sincerely,
Jerry Mael
