Hello
I just bought a 1988 ford taurus LX station wagon for a commuter car.  The car supposely has premium sound(as stated on the speakers on the front door).  Anyways i am trying to install a Kenwood KDC-6005 stereo that i have had for sometime.  I am trying to find a wiring harness for this car but the advertised harness's that ive seen for premium sound dont match with whats in the car. The factory radio had a Black harness and a Grey harness (both same size)connected. How do i find out if this car actually does have premium sound?  Also where is this factory installed amp?  I have the manual for the kenwood. I also have the manual for the vehicle but no help.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You
John

John,
Since you still have the original factory stereo, please give me the complete model number off of it so I can see exactly what sound system your vehicle has in it.

Hi Tom
E6DF-14A459-C are the numbers located on the black male plugs on the back of the stereo.  E8DF-18K843-AA-R.H. are numbers located on some type of metal bracket that is attached to the radio.  I think this is just a a bracket used to properly secure the radio. The stereo itself is a commom ford am-fm cassette.  I went down today to a local auto store and bought a Metra RoadWorks Ford  AW-WHFD2 wiring harness.  It was only about $7 so i thought i would give it a try.
These are the wires that came with the new harness
Black Plug
2 whites 1 with black tracer-left front speaker
2 greens 1 with black tracer-left rear speaker
2 grays 1 with black tracer-right front speaker
2 pinkish purple 1 with black tracer-right rear speaker
Gray Plug
1 yellow - 12v batt mem.
1 orange with black tracer -negative dimmer
1 orange with white tracer- positive dimmer
1 orange-illumination
1 red- 12v ignition/acc
1 black-ground chassis
1 blue-power antenna
1 blue with white tracer-amp turn on
These are the wires that came with my Kenwood stereo harness
1 yellow- not identified but has black pastic box attached to it.
I am assuming this is for memory
1 blue with white tracer- had splice box mark p.cont and ant.
1 black-ground not marked on wire but i am assuming
1 red- 12v ignition/acc not marked on wire but i am assuming
2 grays 1 with black tracer-front R
2 greens 1 with black tracer-rear L
2 whites 1 with black tracer-front L
2 purples 1 with black tracer-rear R
I attempted to hook it up today but had trouble getting sound. Radio turned on but speakers kept cutting out.  I do not have a power antenna on this car.  Not sure what to do with amp-on wire Kenwood harness had no such wire.  Also when i took out the factory radio there was a red wire attached to the back of it with a bolt I am assuming this was some sort of ground.  Speaker wire are not a problem they are self explaning.  I am just confused with the extra wires that i have on the new harness that i bought today.
Thanks once again for your help

Answer
John,
Make sure that the speaker wires are connected directly to each speaker wire pair and be sure that none are crossed connected or grounded to the kenwood chassis or the vehicle chassis ground. Don't worry about any of the other factory wires for dimmer and illumination, the Kenwood doesn't use any of these connections! simply make sure that these are taped up so they do not touch each other. lastly, none of the ford part numbers that you gave me are a part number for the factory stereo, look on the sticker for the correct model number. If the factory stereo only has the one black and the one gray plug, it may only be a non premium stereo that has built in amps.
