Audio Systems: VW CD Changer, laser lighting, vw jetta

I have a 99 VW Jetta with the VW OEM CD changer in the trunk.  It has worked wonderfully for about 4 years and then I noticed it start to skip more than normal.  Finally it said CD Error.  I opened up the unit and the discs are being loaded and spinning Ok but it is like the laser is not reading them.  I am fairly sure that I can see the laser at least lighting up.  Is there an easy fix (probably not) or can you recommend where to send it or should I junk it and buy a new one?  Thank you for your time.

You won't SEE the laser lighting due to it being infrared! our eyes cannot see the output of the laser. You may want to try cleaning the lens of the laser with a Qtip dampened with rubbing alcohol. Contact me direct for repair info about your VW CD changer.
