I have installed a jvc aftermarket stereo system in a 1991 Toyota landcruiser.  After about 1 week the sound quit.  I have removed it several times and it alwas works for a while when I put it back in. Now sometimes it works and sometimes not. I'm going crazy!!!  Anything to do with factory amplifier or security?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you

Mark,
Are you using speakers that are connected directly to the outputs of the stereo or do you have the stereo connected to an amp by RCA cables. Please give me all the details of how you have the stereo wired. If you have it connected to speakers and the output impedance of the stereo isn't matched to the stereo it will cause the amps in the stereo to over heat and shut down. When they shut down you will not have sound.

Tom,  I installed the stereo with a wiring harness kit I purchased with the unit.  I also replaced the speakers.  Is there a possibility one of the speakers is polarized wrong?  Your answer makes sense, however sometimes it is 2 or 3 days before the stereo works again.  Last time I had it torn apart the sound went on and off when I moved the factory wiring harness around.

Answer
Mark,
Having one of the speakers connected in reverse won't make the sound cut off. You may want to check that all the speakers are connected to each speaker feed by themselves and not cross connected to any other feed lines. Also make sure that none of the speaker wires are grounded to the cars body/chassis.
