Audio Systems: Static in 2001 Subaru Forester 6-disc cd player, subaru forester, radio stop

Question
Do we need to buy a new stereo or is this something that can be repaired -- also, any ideas on what is causing the problem?

Thanks much for your initial response.

We recently purchased a used 2001 Subaru Forester.  This vehicle has a 6-disc in-dash cd player.  It worked fine for the first two weeks we used it.  The radio still works with no problem.  However, now when using the CD player we get intermittent loud bursts of static and the audio sounds distorted.  Then it will go back to playing normally.  We've tried changing CD's and have put a couple new cd's in the player to see if this would help.  We are concerned that it might be (1) doing damage to the vehicle to continue using or (2) damage the CD player further if we don't replace / repair immediately.  But we don't want to waste any cash unnecessarily.  Could you please provide any suggestions?  Thanks very much!

Scott,
You won't damage your vehicle by using the stereo. You should have the stereo repaired ASAP or it may go out and make the radio stop working also.

Answer
Scott,
The 6 disc in dash CD player/changers are a mechanical wonder. Even the slightest misalignment of any of the trays will cause to unit to not play or even jam up. In many units their are no repair parts available for the CD changer, the only recourse is to have the complete CD changer inside the stereo replaced.
