Audio Systems: stereo problem, protection circuits, dear bill

Question
I have onkyo TX SV 454 and when i turn the power on for the receiver about 5 seconds after the display blinks protect and the receiver shuts down what could the problem be? and how difficult is it to fix?

Answer
Dear Bill,

When the thermal protection circuits kick in, it generally means that you've blown a fuse because you were playing the thing too danged loud. The user's manual will tell you where to locate the user-servicable fuses. Check 'em out and replace broken ones with new ones of the same value. If they keep popping, then (1) either you're still playing everything way too loud, (2) your speakers are presenting way too much of a load to the amplifier, so the amp's refusing to play, or (3) you've tripped something that's not user-servicable, and you need to take the unit into the shop.

Make sure all your speaker connections are solid, and all are +/+ and -/-. Check that the speakers' impedances are  within the receiver's tolerances (most modern receivers can handle anything from 4-8 ohms--especially Onkyo, an unusually well built component). And stop trying to play it so danged loud!

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,
