Audio Systems: 99 Camry radio, cd laser, factory radio

Question
This is my first car.  The factory radio cd player doesn't work.  What do u suggest.  My dad is very handy, but I'd like to do my homework first before I ask him

The CD laser lense may need to be manually cleaned. If the previous owner of the vehicle was a smoker, that may be the problem. cigarette smoke will settle on the CD laser lense and it will not be able to focus and therefore no play.
