Audio Systems: Camry CD player jammed, car cd players, warranty claim

Question
My 2003 Camry has an in-dash JVC 6-cd changer. Yesterday, while trying to load a cd, it rejected the cd, then would not load another, play any or eject any of them.

Dealer claims because I have played CD-r s in the player, it is jammed.  Also claims a warning is in the owners manual (not that I can find) regarding using cdrs in the unit.  Never heard this before.  Are they just trying to get out of a warranty claim? Do CDrs cause these problems?

Answer
Keith,
It sounds to me like the dealer is trying get out of a warranty repair issue. CDR's sometimes won't play correctly if not at all in car CD players. I have seen with some of the car CD players that come into my shop for repair, that if the label isn't glued on correctly it will come part way off and cause the CD to jam in the player/changer unit. As for the claim that playing a CDR in the changer will void the warranty according to the dealer. I would take my owners manual to the dealer and have them show me where in the manual it says that the warranty will be void if doing so. If they cannot find such info in the owners manual ask them if they have on file any service bulletins about CDR's jamming in a CD changer. If not, I can only advise you to speak to the service mngr and in no certain terms tell them to replace the broken unit under warranty!
