Audio Systems: speaker noise, ground cables, amp power

In my '97 Jeep TJ I installed a small amp and sub.
I've got a small amp (250w) hooked to my 4 speakers and to my 8"sub (only so much room in a TJ you know) but, every time you turn the stereo on or off there is a loud cracking noise from the speakers; and if the engine is running it is even louder and sometimes the music won't even come in, the speakers continue to make this loud cracking noise -

any ideas?

so far I've changed the ground, power and speaker wires around, checked all my connections, played with the gain on the amp and followed all the wiring directions ok

Picked up a noise filter, no help, will return next week.

The thumping I am picking up is when turning the stereo on and off while the Jeep is Not running. When turning the stereo on it actually flashes (the lights and display) as if it is not getting power continuously - or getting to much?

Connected remote wire on sub with acc. terminal on radio as per instructions

any thoughts?

Bill,
The wires suppling the 12volts to the amp must be of the proper size/gauge wire for the amp. A good rule to go by for the correct wire size is to use power and ground wires that just barely fit into the holes in the amp for the power/ground cables. as for the lights flashing with the amp turned on and playing music, you may want to install one or two stiffing caps close to the amp power input wires. If you have a 12 volt tester or a test lamp make sure that the power amp remote lead at the amp is not hot(off) with the key turned on and the stereo turned off. Lastly, the problem may be that the amp has or is failing.

The amp remote lead DOES have power with the key turned on and the stereo turned off.  The instructions said if the stereo didn't have a remote lead to connect it to the acc. lead.  How do I fix this?
thanks,

Answer
Bill,
You can correct this problem by installing a small toggle switch somewhere near your stereo to turn off the remote (on)control power to the amp when not needed. Most factory stereos that are as new as yours should have a switched lead that goes hot(12volts) with the stereo turned on. You may want to check with your local Jeep dealer and ask what color wire from the stereo is switched on with the stereo. If you do find this out you can connect the amp remote lead to this wire to turn on the amp when the stereo is on.
