Audio Systems: Hitachi 43fd1b, center channel speaker, theresa white

Question
We turned on the tv and there is blue and green arches in the upper left and some right corners.
I see where someone answered a question about a speaker being near the set.  We have had a surround sound speaker in the middle of the top of the set and recently did remodeling and moved it.  What can we do to fix this?  What is a degassing coil?  Can you help us?

Thanks
Bob and Theresa White

Answer
Dear Bob and Theresa,

Generally, speakers designed for home theater are magnetically shielded so the very strong magnets, which are an essential component of speaker design, do not affect your picture tube. However, if the center channel speaker is not magnetically shielded, the phenomenon you're describing (a skewing of the color applications over the picture screen) will occur over time.

Degaussing is a procedure which demagnetizes something that has been magnetized. Degaussing wands are used by professional TV repairmen to remove the magnetism from picture tubes that have been corrupted by non-magnetized speakers. This is not a do-it-yourself procedure: you have to take your TV into a repair facility and have them do it. I have no idea how much this can cost. I'd suggest calling around (1) to see if anyone does it; and (2) if so, how much they'll charge.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,
