I have a 2003 impala that I want to put two 12 inch rockford fosgates in the trunk.I don't know much about car stereo systems. I just wanted to know what I need to get optimum sound and bass (ie.what amp.,the right highs and mids, the wires).

Ryan,

ok now if you already have an aftermarket unit you have made the first good step .. if you are wanting to add a sub and amp to your stock factory stereo its not only difficult and costly for the hardware but you wont get near the sound from the unit as you would if you had a good aftermarket mid grade head unit .. now i will touch on some basics for you ... Fosgates are an excellent brand but they are expensive also audiobahn make some very good subs but like fosgate they are in the higher dollar range .. find a set of subs that fit your budget and howmuch sound you want .. pay attention to your sub's specs such as the OHM rating 2 / 4 /8 and also the max wattage rating and the RMS watt rating these you will need when you buy your amp.. now for the amp you should choose one like i said before that fits your budget and needs, the brand i recommend that is very low priced but great quality and sound is power accustik but sony , audiobahn, alpine, all of these are excellent brands but will cost more.. now be sure your amps specs match the subs your purchased for example " your subs are 450 watts RMS @ 4 Ohms " your amp should have the same specs for its channels .. now i would recommend a simple 2 channel unless you buy DVC subwoofer *Dual Voice Coil* but you dont need nothing like that so i would keep it simple with the reg SVC subwoofers .. ok now depending on how many watts your amp is , but more than likly you will be pushing over 600 atleast you will also need a capacitor 300-600 watts a .5 FARAD Capacitor should do good , 600-1400 1-1.5 FARAD should work.. the capacitor is like a mini battery that not only protects your car's charging system but also stores extra power so when your subs kick down on some real low bass you have power to boost it up .. you will need a good gauge of power/ground wire this depends on your wattage .. any salesperson at a radioshack or circuit city that has wire can get you the right gauge for your amp.. a good rule is the bigger the better .. same for the speaker wires i recommend 14-16 gauge.. now like i said before you need an aftermarket head unit since you are wanting a good range of sound you really need a good one with plenty of power and control maybe with an EQ would be good .. now after you have the good unit , a simple swap out of the factory speakers will get your clarity and performance up for your mid's and high's .. hope this helps you out if you need anything else let me know

thanks

 One more question sir,
I already wanted to get a good pioneer c.d. player inplace of the factory one. The thing is the factory unit controls certain settings in my car (EX.alarm chirp length, running lights after car is turned off, etc.)Im worried if i take out the factory unit what would happen to my ability to control those settings?

Answer
Ryan,

that is new to me, i didnt know the unit controlled the length of your alarm chirp, the program for your lights to shut off and other odds and ends that cars do even if its through the head unit is preprogrammed in the computer.. read up on your owners manual to double check everything but no matter what radio shack should be able to order you a harness that can mend any factory option, they have one for the steering wheel control option that you can reuse with an aftermarket unit... talk to them and see what they can get for you ... if you need anything else just let me know

thanks
