Audio Systems: Speakers cut out as volume is increased, 12 volt, mid volume

Question
I ran a brand new 14 gauge power wire and a new 14 gauge ground wire--still happens.  I am now thinking that something is wrong with the radio itself.

Thanks Tom,

I doubled checked the speaker wires and all are correct.  Any other ideas?  I thought maybe I should run a new power wire from the battery directley to the radio-what size wire would you recomend?

I recently replaced the radio in my boat with a Dual MXD40 AM/FM/CD Marine Receiver. The original radio was installed by a previous owner.  The old radio had two harnesses--I wired the new radio to the old harness.  The unit works fine when the volume is set below 15 (volume scale goes up from 00 to 39)  Between 16 and 20 I start to get static, then at about 20 I loose sound.  When I loose sound, there is still power to the unit and the CD keeps playing.  Any ideas?

Todd,
Double check that you don't have any of the speaker feeds and returns crossed. Review the owners/installation instructions to see how to correctly wire the speakers. With the sound going out at mid volume, I would say the a wire is crossed and that is causing an over load on the amp/s which is shutting down the audio output.

Todd,
It's possible that the 12 volt feed to your stereo isn't heavy enough and when the stereo draws more current during higher volume levels it will cause the audio output to cut off? check and or replace the feed wires to a larger size wire.

Answer
Todd,
It's possible that the radio is defective or the voltage supply to the radio is cutting off at higher volume levels. However with the CD still indicating that it is playing when the sound cuts off tells me possibly that the amp in the radio is defective.
