Audio Systems: 96 4Runner stock stereo stuck on Tape mode, stock stereo, radio mode

I have a 1996 4Runner w/ the stock stereo (single cd, tape deck and radio).  The unit is stuck in the "Tape" mode and all of the function buttons (w/ the exception of the power dial/button) are rendered useless.  The LCD display remains on in tape mode even when the car is off (it used to go blank).  Is it fried or can this be repaired?

Two possible problems may cause what you described. 1-The tape radio switch if mechanical is stuck in the tape mode if this stereo has a mechanical switch. 2-The electronic switch for tape/radio mode is defective.
