Audio Systems: CD Changer problem, Honda Accord 94, spindle motor, honda accord

Question
Hello Tom,

I have a 94 Honda Accord with AM/FM/Cassette/CD Audio System, and a 6-Disk CD Changer in the trunk.  Everything was working fine until about a year ago, when the CD player stopped working (display showed "CD E-1"), and the changer wouldn't eject the cartridge.  I unmounted the changer, opened the box and managed to manually eject the cartridge (by pressing a metal piece under the cartridge holder).  I put the changer back in its place and it started working.  But  the problem is that the same problem has been happening every few weeks since then, and sometimes even a CD gets stuck in the reader and I have to pull it out after ejecting the cartridge.  Each time so far I have been able to fix the problem the way I mentioned, and the system is working now, but I was wondering if you could tell me what the actual source of the problem is, and if there is any permanent fix for that.  Your help is greatly appreciated.

Answer
Jaber,
The CD E-1 code is an error code that means a mechanical fault is present. If the CD cartridge can be removed(ejected ) and a CD is still loaded the problem may be with the CD gripper rollers. The gripper will pull or push the CD in and out of the play position. However, this can't happen until the mechanics that clamp the CD between the top clamp assembly and the spindle motor release the hold on the CD. The problem may be due to an faulty electrical connection or a faulty switch. I have also found on some CD changers that the very small motor that operates the clamping mode is failing and the motor will sometimes operate intermittently.
