Audio Systems: how to install a new radio in a 2000 Ford Explorer, sony cdx r3000, pig tail

Question
Hi Mr Clark,

The factory stereo in my 2000 Ford Explorer (YL2F-18C868-CA) works but the display is out, so I bought a Sony CDX-R3000 to replace it.  The stock stereo included a 6-disk changer.  My question is regarding the wiring.

The explorer has 3 plastic pieces of 3 different sizes with various wires going into them.  These 3 plastic pieces were plugged into the back of the stock stereo.  The new stereo only has a place for 1 plastic piece to be plugged into with free wires hanging out of that piece.  There are additionally 3 other free plastic pieces of different sizes with wires coming out of them included in the box.  These 3 pieces are as follows:

one has a brown wire called mute and a blue wire called power antenna; the 2nd piece has white, gray, blue, and black pieces called L front, R front, amp, and amp ground, and the 3rd piece has white, green, orange, gray, red, and yellow wires for speakers, 12 volt, and illuminaiton.

It looks like the wires from the piece in the stereo need to be connected to the wires of these 3 pieces.  Should I connect the loose wires from the piece in the stereo to the wires of just one of the additional 3 pieces, or use all 3?

I hope this question makes sense.  If not please email me at rajul01@yahoo.com.  Thank you so much for your help.

Sincerely,

Rajul Patel

Answer
Hello Rajul,
The three plugs are used for the following. 1-power and ground. 2-from CD changer. 3-speaker connector. Your vehicle may have a premium amplifier somewhere inside, if not you can purchase adapter connectors that you plug onto the factory speaker and power connectors and then using the pig tail wires you simply follow the wiring instructions and connect together the proper wires, power, ground and speakers.
