Audio Systems: Lausanne CD30, vacuum tube, punto elx

Question
I was also wondering that maybe there is no lights cause the leds may be connected in series and if one were to blow the it would cause the others not to work? also any ideas as to what the DC to DC convertor looks like and would it be inside just the removable faceplate or inside the actuall headunit of the stereo.
Pics of the faceplate taken apart are here:

I have a Blaupunkt Luasanne cd30 that came standard with my fiat punto elx. The problem is that the display doesnt light up and neither do the buttons,i have made sure the face is pressed all the way in and theres still no light. Hopefully you can shed some 'light' on the situation.

Hello Eoghan,
The lamps that back light the LCD display and the buttons may be burned out. If not the supply voltage to them is dead. On some stereos the display is a Vacuum tube type display that requires about 40-50 volts DC from the DC to DC convertor circuit to light up the display. This power supply may also supply power for the lamps.

Answer
Eoghan,
By looking at the photos that you sent, the display is an LCD type of display. This display is back lit with small lamps possibly two or three lamps. I cannot see the display up close to see if any lamps are used for the bottons. To replace the lamps for the display you will need to and very carefully unsolder the tabs of the metal sheild around the LCD. With the sheild removed you may have to gently lift up the display (use caution not to put to much force/stress on the glass display are you will crack it. I have to get off now do to a bad thunder storm over head I will get back to you ASAP,

Eoghan,
The lamps may have simply burned out or they are controlled by some type of brightness circuit. These small lamps are normally connected in parallel and a power surge on the 12 line can make most if not all burn out. You can purchase mini replacement lamps from Radio Shack or from MCM electronics.
