Audio Systems: CD Changer quit working..., screw driver, disc number

Question
I tried your suggestion to get the magazine out, didn't work. Any other ideas how to get it out? Also, how hard is it to take the unit out and put back so I can clean it? Thanks!-------------------------

Hi ~ I own a 2001 Ford Focus LX Sedan w/factory AM/FM cassette. I purchased it in December '03. It has an AUDIOVOX 6-disc changer mounted in the trunk. Approx. one month ago, it quit working properly. The deck display reads "no cd" when I push the "CD" button on the deck. Or, the disc number simply flashes and the player doesn't "pick up" or read the disc. On a few occasions when I messed around w/ the deck, there was an audible sound thru the speakers, kind of like when you have something wired wrong and you can hear it thru the speakers...I also can hear the changer trying to load a disc, then it quits. Additionally, I cannot get the magazine to eject. Is this an equipment or install/wiring/connection problem. Or is it just that Audiovox sucks?

Thanks!

Hello Sara,
The problem with the CD changer may be that the laser lense is dusty/dirty. With dirt on the lense the unit will not be able to complete a focus search and this will send an error code. You can try doing a manual cleaning of the laser lense using a Qtip dampened with rubbing alcohol. with the Qtip, gently rub the lense to remove any dist/dirt that may be on the lense.(this requires that you remove the changer from your car and take off the cover) To remove the magazine try this, turn off the ignition key and unplug the power cable to the changer and then plug back in and turn on the key. Next, push the eject button on the front of the changer to eject the magazine. As for the wiring, you may have a problem and you should have an installer take a look at the wiring.

Answer
Sara,
It isn't hard at all to remove the CD changer unit from the trunk. All you will need is  a screw driver to remove the four screws holding the CD changer in place and then unplug the cable/s. I would have someone take a look at the wiring of the stereo and the CD changer, the problem may only be a wiring fault.
