Audio Systems: crossovers, rca cables, quality isnt

Question
Why are most crossovers AFTER the amp and not before the amps.  I would think that to get a better sound and not lose as much db if  you would put a 3way crossover in and send you highs to 1 amp, mids to another, and subs to another amp.  Am I nuts or can this be done?

Answer
Jay,

i have never heard of it being done .. the reason a Xover is after an amp is because you have RCA cables that feed the amp .. now in the case where your amp is ran by hi-inputs your quality isnt near as good ..and on a normal set up with RCA cables the only place to wire in an X over is after the amp before the speakers .. if you wired one in before an amp it wouldnt *as far as i know* make much of an affect because an amp is impartial to the freqs.. *unless it has a built in xover which i use* .. as far as it being done sure anything can be done btu if it works better or will benefit more from it being before rather than after i would say a big No .. hope this helps you out if you need anything else or have any ideas you want to discuss let me know be glad to help out

thanks
