Audio Systems: Radio loses station memory, mike futrell, memory wire

Question
I put new speakers in an 89 Toyota pickup, but disconnected the radio while in the process.

Now, if I leave it on when I turn off the key, it doesn't automatically come back on when I start it, and I have to reset the radio stations everytime I turn the key off.

This is a old, original-equipment toyota radio. At the moment, there is only one power wire going to the radio. Is there supposed to be another one? I didn't see any dangling.

Answer
Hello Mike,
Most stereos will have two power wires. one for memory (hot at all times) and the other wire is switched on with the key. Use a volt meter or a 12 volt test lamp and look for the memory wire, it has to have 12 volts at all times in order to hold the station(presets) when you turn off the key. PS normally a red power wire is switched with the key and a yellow wire is the memory wire. Give me the complete model number off the radio and I will look over the service data for your radio.
