Audio Systems: Low speaker volume in most speakers, speaker cones, rear speakers

Question
Hi Tom,
In my 1994 Dodge mini-van, my left front dashboard speaker seems to work fine. (All OEM speakers.) When I switch the sound from my (old and brand new) stereo to the rear speakers or right front speaker, the volume is very low and "tinny" sounding. The right front dashboard speaker occasionally works at full volume. The front door speakers don't work at all. Before I tear apart the car to look at the wiring, what are the chances that I need to replace the speakers?

Thanks, Ed Thomas

Answer
Hello ED,
Several things may be the cause of the problem, 1- the speaker cones were water damaged or the edge foams are rotted out. 2-a fault with the wires exist. You can use an VOM to test each speaker line for continuity. All speaker lines/wires should measure around 8 ohms or approx the same. as measured from the connector that plugs into the radio.
