Well another thing i'm curious about, If I had a subwoofer box with two speakers inside (600 watts) what kind of amp would I need for it?

Tom I don't have a lot of money to pour into a grand stereo system, besides I have a very small car (1995 Mazda Mx3).  All I really want is more bass and clarity in sound than I have right now.  What kind of set up should I be looking for?  I've never installed my own system either, another problem but how much wattage should I be looking for?  Any specific name brands either?

Hello will,
Check into Pioneer and JVC, they make some decent stereos for the money. You probably won't need more than a 50 to 60 watt stereo for a small vehicle. Check out what BestBuy and CircuitCity has on display, Ask about a stereo with a built in sub woofer output. More power doesn't always mean a better sounding system.

Answer
Will,
You should have at least a 400 to 500 watt amp to drive your speakers. You can use a stereo amp configured for a sub woofer output or your can shop for a amp that is set up for use with subwoofers. Many people that I know with powerful sound systems have a stereo amp with the outputs bridged and then connected to the subwoofers.
