Question -
Upon turning on my van's radio system, a deafening screeching noise will sometimes begin without warning. The volumn control has no effect on the noise level. The only way to control this noise is by turning the radio off. Turning off the separate equalizer has no effect.

Twice, I've removed the two-part system (radio and equalizer) and had it examined and (repaired?) by a local automobile radio repair specialist).

The first repair in 1997 seemed to last for about a year. I took it back the following year for the same problem. As the repair shop was in the process of relocating to central Oregon, he attempted to provide a solution to the ongoing problem by giving me a duplicate radio and two of the equalizers.

Since then I have interchanged each of the two radios with each of the three equalizers with the same result...Screeeeeeeeeeeeeech.

What really needs to be addressed to provide relief from this noise?

Thanks,

Irv

Hello Irv,
It appears that the repair people did not fix the cause of the problem, I have worked on several of these Toyota radio systems with the same problem. They all had an easy fix/cure to the problem. For info on having your radio repaired at my shop please Email me direct at: tdeser@zoominternet.net

Followup Question-

Hello Tom:

Thanks for your quick response to my original question. Please enlighten me as to where the problem is located. It seems rather odd that the same screeching occurs even after trying the six (6) different combinations of radios and equalizers that I have.

By the way these are the "top of the line" Toyota factory units that originally came with my van. I still can't believe that I paid over $800 for this option.

thanks,

Irv

Answer
Irv,
The problem with your stereo system isn't in the EQ or the Radio. The screeching is caused by faulty capacitors on the speaker amplifier board/s. Most of the time the amplifier boards are located near the speakers. These amp boards can be easily rebuilt by my service shop. I rebuild about 200 of these boards each year.
