Audio Systems: 1996 Chevy cavalier radio, chevy cavalier, chevy dealer

Question
Hi I have just recently purchased a used 1996 chevy cavalier. I was told that recently they had purchased the vehicle and replaced the battery and then sold it to me. The problem is the thft lock radio, first I find out that I need a code, so I took it to a chevy dealer. They said there is no power to the radio. Im a very unsure on where to start with this problem, my husband is pretty handy with cars and im sure he could do it if he new where to start. Another question is how do u get out the radio? Where do u start in getting the dash apart?

Answer
Hello Jill,
Most radios have two power sources to them, one for holding the station memory and a second that is switched on with the ignition on. Use a volt meter after you remove the radio and measure the voltage on the connector pins 9 & 10 you should measure 12 volts on both pins with the key to on. as far as removing the radio you will need to remove the trim around the radio, some are held in place by screws and others will unsnap away from the dash. If you cannot figure how to remove the radio let me know I will look up the procedure on my shop computer when I return to my shop on Tuesday morning.
