Audi Repair: Audi A4 starting problems, click sound, starter motor

Question
Hi, I have a 1996 A4 1.8 Auto with 60k miles. The starting problem started about 6 months ago, and usually when the engine is warm. The ignition lights come on (2nd turn) but when I try to start the engine nothing happens except for a very slight 'click' sound. After several attempts or wait 5-10 minutes it will start. It has been regularly serviced, timing belt changed, new battery & a local mechanic seems to think its the 3 relays (1 already swapped out). Can you assist? Thanks.

Answer
if you can hear a click when you turn the key, that means the solenoid is working but the starter is not engaging.  This problem is probably the starter motor itself.  There are no relays in the starter circuit, only the wire from the ignition switch to the starter motor...  If the relay that they switched did not fix the problem, tell them you want the old one back, since it war probably fine.  Let me know what you find,  Jan
