Audi Repair: audi a-6 2001 engine causing transmission issue, mass air flow sensor, mass air flow

Question
2001 A-6 2.8 Quattro Sedan with 72,000 miles
Auto Transmission with Tip-Tronic feature

This problem has been happening for 1 year. Everytime I come to a stop, the transmission clunks very loudly right before the car comes to a complete stop.
Audi dealer replaced under warrenty the transmission and transmission computer - neither fixed the issue.

My local mechanic just replaced the spark plugs and wires and now the problem has been reduced. It still clunks or slams as it down shifts but not as loud or severe anymore. Oh and let me add, the problem only happens on a hot engine after driving a few miles or so. It runs perfectly when cold.

No codes or warning lights on dash ever come on.

Just a guess but we replaced the mass air flow sensor unit - that did not help at all.

Now we are thinking perhaps a throttle body control problem.

Any ideas or suggestions?!

Many thanks!

Answer
I don't think it is an engine problem, perhaps an engine mount is bad though, an audible clunk just before stopping is normal, but it should not be that noticeable.  Did you drive a similar car to compare the noise?  That may be worth doing.  If the trans and control were changed, maybe it is somewhere else in the drive train, such as the differentials?  I would check engine mounts and iffs first.  Let me know what you find,  Jan
