Audi Repair: 1993 audi starter, negative terminal, serpentine belt

Question
i have to replace the starter on my 1993 audi do i have to
remove the alternator and if so how do i release th tension
on the serpentine  belt please help pete

Answer
The starter faces the rear of the engine, and can be removed without touching the alternator.  However it needs to be done from underneath, and even though it is only held in by 2 bolts, it can be a real pain to remove because of lack of room.  On my 1997 Cabrio, I had to lower the subframe in order to gain enough clearance.  Make sure you undo the battery negative terminal before starting this job!  Let me know,  Jan
