Audi Repair: front transaxle leak, transmission shops, catalitic converter

Question
hi I have 96 a quattro. its leaking fluid that seems to me to be gear oil its thick and tan. its leaking on the catalitic converter which makes it smoke. is there common place or hose that could leak from or should i bring it to transmission shop? it shifts fine and it started leaking after 1000 mile trip. what do you think? thanks

Answer
You forgot to tell me if this is an automatic or a manual transmission.  Either way if you have developed a leak like this, it is definitely worth getting it looked at.  I tend to avoid transmission shops because they always seem to suggest a new transmission or a transmission overhaul.  I'd take it to an import specialist and get the problem assessed.  Let me know what you find,  Jan
