Audi Repair: Audi 97 A4 Electrical problem, audi 97, ampmeter

Question
I know this is a long shot, but my audi has something wrong with it that is causing the battery to drain completely. The car wouldn't start so we replaced the battery and it started up just fine until we let it sit for a while. After sitting something had completely drained the new battery and it won't start again. I figure there's porbably no way for you to know what is wrong with it with just that description, but if you could just let me know how to go about trying to find the problem it would be a huge help. Thanks

Answer
Well what I would do is the following:  Switch off everything, take the key out of the ignition, pop the hood and disconnect one of the battery terminals.  Connect an Ampmeter between the terminal and the battery, you are now measuring the drain current when everything is off.  Do not switch on anything (most ampmeters can only handle a few amps before blowing a fuse), and make sure the interior lights are off.  You should see a value of around 50 milliAmps or less.  I am suspecting you will see around 1 Amp indicating something is faulty.  Now you have to start pulling fuses, and see when the drain current drops to an acceptable value.  That will narrow it down to one circuit.  If the fuses are in the end of the dash like on my S4, you have to by-pass or switch off the interior lights.  Let me know what you find,  Jan
