Audi Repair: Audi A6 2.5 TDi SE Auto - Engine Electronics warning light??, lightning bolt, audi a6

Question
I have a 1995 (UK registered) A6 2.5 TDi SE auto (engine code AAT - 115 BHP). Recently, a dashboard warning light has remained illuminated for approx 60 secs. The word "CHECK" appears below the symbol. This symbol normally illuminates and then extinguishes upon starting the engine. I could not find any mention of this warning light in the driver's handbook that came with the car. However, I did find it in the driver's handbook for my 1988 Audi 80 S! The symbol looks like the black outline of an engine, and it is on a yellow background. There is also a lightning bolt through the symbol. My Audi 80 S book says that it relates to "Engine Electronics".

My A6 drives normally, the only difference being the recently increased time it takes for this symbol to be extinguished.

Can you offer an explanation, do I need to worry about this?

Thanks,

Les

Answer
Not sure what that could be, does the light go out quicker if you rev the engine a little?  It may be that the alternator is not generating quite as efficiently as it used to, and this causes the light to stay on.  The warning light does look like engine electronics, but on a diesel you don't have many electronics to worry about...!

Let me know what you find,  Jan
