What all should I replace when replacing timing belt?  I've heard water pump, thermostat, belt tensioner. I want to have everything there when I start. It's a 1998 A6 quattro 2.8 5v

the scope of the work depends on what is actually worn out, the belt should be replaced with all the tensioners and relay pulleys, while the water pump only needs replacing if it is faulty. this will be obvious when the timing belt covers have been removed and a visual inspection of the pump carried out.
