Audi Repair: 97 A4 Quattro Malfunction Indicator Light, engine control modules, malfunction indicator light

Question
The MIL (malfunction indicator light)came on last week, and stayed on. Dealership charged over $100 to diagnose "engine control module malfunctioning internally and will need replacement". They state part costs $1850, plus $400 labor to install. Told me it's OK to drive, but won't pass emissions control testing this way and I need that to renew registration ASAP. Car has just 67K miles but hard to justify that kind of investment given market value, etc. I see used and remanufactured ECM's on-line much cheaper, but worry they won't hold up (who thought this would fail at just 67K miles?)and who would I get to install correctly? Any recommendations -- and is it really OK to drive it this way?

Answer
Engine control modules do fail, however I would take the car to an import shop or autozone to get the codes read out for free.  Please let me know the actual code numbers, and then we'll compare notes.  I would get a second opinion from another dealership before jumping into a new ECM...  Let me know,  Jan

You are obviously a spoilt and impatient person who does not appreciate free advice when it is given.  The advice I gave you was simple and sound.  I don't have unlimited time to devote to answering everyone's problems, which is why there is a daily maximum for the number of questions I answer.  As I state quite clearly in my profile, you are free to leave any feedback; however considering the reply I gave was correct, your feedback is unwarranted and childish. You do NOT deserve my time. Please go back to the dealership and pay through the NOSE for all your repairs.  Bye.
