Audi Repair: 96 A4 B5 start briefly and trip when the rev counter reaches 1 rpm., fuel pump relay, manual gearbox

QUESTION: My 96 A4 B5 start briefly and trip when the rev counter reaches 1 rpm. It all started last Thursday after warming the engine for five minutes. As I was ready to go to work, engine will stop as I accelerate to move. I tried for several times but could not move the car. Anytime the engine rev is increase from idle, it      trips. Later after work, i tried and it started but when rev above 2.6. to 3. It trips to lower rev and regain speed without the engine stop {just up and down}. I drove to workshop for scanning but didn't record any alarm. Fuel pump was checked and it was ok, changed fuel filter. I drove back home 3-rpm engine. One mechanic was saying that it timing. After setting it, no sign of improvement.
Currently, it will start briefly and stops at1 rpm. Please note prior to every trip; a relay 208 trips simultaneously then the engine goes off. Please help me



ANSWER: You dont say what kind of engine you have, is it a petrol or diesel??
what about the gearbox???

I'll assume you have a petrol engine, with a manual gearbox. below is a list of possibilities...


either you have a fuel problem or an electrical fault, you say the fuel pump was tested... what test was carried out and what were the results???have you measured the fuel pressure at the rails?? maybe the fuel pump is ok but the pressure regulator has failed.

What kind of diagnosis was carried out??? most generic OBD 2 scanners only pick up faults related to emission control.


as for the electrical fault, start with the battery, check the terminals are tight, and all connections are clean and tight,

Also try replacing the relay which i am assuming is the fuel pump relay( usually 7 pin) and see if there is a difference

QUESTION: The engine is petrolwith manul gear box. For fuel pump, we uses an external purging systen to run the engine and even replaced the feul pump but still no improvement. We have change the fuel filter too.Currently, the engine will start and idle. the moment you accelerate it trips with a bang sound in the cylinders after which the relay trips.
is there any procedure for testing the camshaft sensor.
For the code, the ones which registered were airflow meter,battery alarms,oxygen sensor alarms which were as a result of removing and refixing.all codes were cleared.

Have you checked the injectors?? does the car have a mis fire?? the banging you describe in the cylinders sounds like either a compression fault or a firing order fault, remove the plugs and examine them. are they ok??? any signs of damage?? most likely you will have a compression fault which can be confirmed wit a compression test.
