Audi Repair: AUDI A6 1999 TDI 110, air flow meter, audi a6 1999

Question
QUESTION: JAN THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME, JUST TWO THINGS,THE DISPLAY ON THE DASH IS READING E ALL THE TIME WHAT DOES THIS MEAN.
SECONDLY, LOSS OF POWER WHEN DRIVING FOR A WHILE BUT IF I TURN THE CAR OFF AND RESTART IT AGAIN IT WILL RUN OK AGAIN.
I WOULD BE GREATFUL FOR YOURE HELP. I WAS TOLD IT COULD BE A SWITCH AS THE AIR FLOW METER WAS CHECKED AND OK.
THANK YOU

ANSWER: Hi,  You say the display is reading E, I am assuming the center display uit, not the fuel gauge.  If the engine loses power when driving and needs a re-start to basically reset itself, perhaps a temperature sensor is malfunctioning; ECT Engine Cooolant Sensors are notorious.  Is the E yellow or red?  Let me know,  Jan

QUESTION: Hi Jan, thank you for your reply, the E is red in the center display unit.

Answer
Hi I did find a pdf which shows some of the symbols, is it in the list?  Not many diesel cars here in the US.  Copy the whole link into your browser adress window:

Let me know if this helps,  Jan
