Audi Repair: Audi Quattro 2000, 1989, L5 Engine, emery cloth, old battery

Question
I have a problem starting the car. When you turn the ignition key, the engine does not crank. I have replace the battery for a new one, it does the same thig. The only way to start the engine is with jumping cables. I have to do this before with the old battery and also now with the new battery. I thought my problem was the battery. Could this be the alternator because after running the car for a while, I turned off the engine and on again and the engine does not crank. I would appreciate your input. Thank you very much for your attention.

Answer
It sounds like perhaps there is a bad contact on the battery terminals.  I would use some steel wool or emery cloth and clean the connecting cables.  Is the battery the correct amperage?  Did the car start OK for a while?  If the car is running, the battery voltage should be at almost 14V  if that is the case, then the alternator is OK.  Let me know,  Jan
