Audi Repair: fuel problem, heater control valve, position sensors

Question
QUESTION: 1996 Audi Quattro - Car would run roughly and seem to stall below half a tank
or sometimes right after filling tank. Added dry gas and it seemed to help.
Would not start at all so we replaced the fuel filter. Can hear the fuel pump and
there is pressure at the filter. Turns over but does not attempt to fire. Any
suggestions? Thanks

ANSWER: Did you check the fuel pressure at the engine?  Any chance a foreign object got into the tank and is stopping fuel flow?  I am assuming you are getting a spark.  Let me know,  Jan

QUESTION: There appears to be no spark. Car drove fine one day. Next day would not start.
I am unaware if there is a fuse or relay for the system. We changed the battery
before this happened is it possible by simply disconnecting and reconnecting
that this inadvertently could have caused a problem. This vehicle's battery is
under the rear seat next to the computer.

ANSWER: I would check the crank position sensors.  Also verify that the ignition relay is functioning correctly.  There are multiple different reasons for no spark...  When you changed the battery there were no wires left loose?  Let me know,  Jan

QUESTION: Thank you for your suggestions. We bought the car for our son to drive in the
winter. It also has a heat problem. Blows but only cold. I am not sure if it is
worth putting more money into it or just cut our losses.
Thanks again

Answer
Perhaps the system needs a coolant flush, or the heater control valve is stuck.  This has nothing to do with the no-spark problem though.  Dealer repairs on these cars tend to be fairly expensive, but a good import shop should be able to help you out with a diagnosis.  Let me know,  Jan
