Audi Repair: Audi A4 misfire?, audi a4 quattro, leakdown test

Question
I have an Audi A4 Quattro with a 2.8 liter V6.  The timing belt idler recently failed and the timing belt jumped 2 teeth on the right side camshaft.  A timing set, water pump, and thermostat were installed.  In addition, a compression check was performed yielding pressures between 230 and 225.  What I notice is the right side of the engine has more valve train noise then the left side, and I intermittently get a misfire on cylinder number 1. Spark plugs have been replaced and the ignition pattern looks good on all cylinders.  Do you think there is valve damage, or could there be another cause for the misfire?

Answer
Hi,  Really the only way to tell is to do a leakdown test.  A compression test will give a fairly good indication, however a leakdown test is a more accurate test of how sound the compression chamber is.  You mention more valve noise, are you sure it's valve noise and not a small gas leak past a couple of valves?  Does #1 plug look the same as the others?  If the plugs look good, then the problem may be a bad ignition wire or something simple like that.  However a two-teeth jump is right in the area where things start to interfere so if it turns out to be something simple; I'd go out and buy some lottery tickets!  Let me know,  Jan
