Audi Repair: error codes, mass airflow sensor, vacuum leaks

Question
QUESTION: Hello, I have a 1999 A6 quattro. It has recently started to cut out and die sometimes when in park. It feels like it has a hard time holding the rpm's steady. when driving, it will cut or doug down and it feels like the motor is dogged down. Also, the water temp. sensor inside in the cluster rarely reads a temp and when it does it jumps almost instantly to the halfway point. I took it to an autozone and it gave their machine the following error codes.
P1141, P1139, P1129, P1127, P1137, P1250. Please help me and how can i fix some of these myself?

ANSWER: Hi,  It looks like you have the 4.2L motor.  All the codes you indicate show that the engine is running way too rich.  P1250 is an error Fuel level too low, which seems contradictory.  This could be due to a faulty Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) or ECU problem.  I am sorry I cannot be of more help, the codes you can lookup on:  http://www.bentleypublishers.com/tech/audi/audi.dtc.table.htm  Let me know what you find,  Jan

QUESTION: Hello, thanks for the response, but i have the 2.8l a6. could that change anything and would the temp. sensor have something to do with it? I also have a broken vacume line close to the firewall, more inbetween the firewall and the motor. Is that why i am running rich? Thanks again!

ANSWER: You can try plugging the vacuum line on the engine end, vacuum leaks are never good.  The temp sensor also determines the mixture, so is indeed part of the equation.  The fault codes you mention do not refer to the temp sensor though.

QUESTION: hello again, i replaced my air filter just for kicks today and the temp. sensor started working miraculously? anyway, while i was toying around with the motor i unplugged the mass airflow sensor, and the car did not hesitate anymore, and when i plugged the M.A.S. back in, it immediatly started to hesitate again. I did however try to drive the car without the MAF plugged in and it ran fine without any hesitation, but it felt like i was perm. in 4th gear. and i couldnt select any gears. the display that shows the gears was aslo blurred out. Besides those issues, the car ran fine without the MAF plugged in, should i replace the MAF? or could thier be more problems?

Answer
It does indeed sound like your MAF is not acting correctly.  What happens if you unplug it, the ECU will go into limp-home mode, but this is apparently better than what the MAF is doing to it.  I would replace it, although maybe you can get the MAF checked at a dealership...  Let me know,  Jan
