Audi Repair: flashing dome light, dome light, faults

Question
Why are my dome lights flashing when I start the car and when I'm driving? It is a slow off/on in a random order. Nothing on the dash reading is showing any faults.

Answer
The fact that the dome lights are coming on could be related to a bad ignition switch; does it change behaviour if you move the key slightly?  Otherwise I would suspect a bad ground or short to ground somewhere, I would remove the light and check the connections to the unit.  Let me know,  Jan
