Audi Repair: 2002 Audi A-6 Quattro Battery Replacement, cigarette lighter, replacement job

Question
What are the potential pitfalls of replacing a the battery myself?  Is it required to keep power to the vehicle during the battery change process through the cigarrette lighter or jump box?  What else should I be aware of?

Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Mike,

The only pitfall is losing the radio code. (if it has been enabled in the radio) so to stop that from happening you can keep a 12V supply attached to the cigarette lighter.  This makes the replacement job a little tougher, since normally when you replace the Negative or ground terminal first, and move it out of the way, there is no danger of a short when you remove the positive terminal by accidentally touching part of the car frame while undoing the positive connection.  However if you have an independent 12V supply attached, now the positive terminal wire stays 'hot' all the time so you can never touch this terminal to any metal part of the car, or make a short between this terminal and the car using a wrench during the exchange process.  Might just be safer to find the radio code card...  Not a difficult job though, Cheers,  Jan.
