Audi Repair: Audi A4 96 fuel pump problem, engine cranks, fuel pump relay

Question
Hi Gre, thanks for all the tons of helpful info.
AudiA4 1996 1.6 112000Miles, has been hard to start for a while. Engine cranks and turns over for a second or 2 before cutting off. I wait a few seconds, try again and vooom I go. SOmetimes it just starts with no problem and runs for days.
Just yesterday it just cut off fuel supply to the engine and stalled. It wont start since then, just cranks and turns over but no fuel ios going to the engine to run it. I've taken the fuel filter off and confirmed that its not blocked. With the fuel filter off, I've cranked the engine and see that no fuel is coming from the tank.
I suspect the fuel pump, but before I get the tank removed to replace the pump, I'm thinking of checking/ testing the fuel pump relay. Where is this located and how can I test it? What could be the problem?
Thanks
Oz

Answer
hello
I do not know much about European models ( I live in US)
but If you can get to the top fuel tank , where fuel pump is. Our Quarto has it under the rear seat. You will see large connector with few wires, there are two big ones, 2.5 gauge, one is power and the other ground. when you crank the car there have to 12V or more. If there is 12v, and no fuel is coming out - you have bad fuel pump.
I will not see any manuals till monday, so can tell you where the relay is, sorry
good luck              Greg
