Audi Repair: audi front wheel drive, wheel bearings, car repair shops

Question
Hi Greg,
I have a 1999 audi A4 1.8 turbo, frontwheel drive. I use it for work, traveling about 250 miles a day. It has about 200,000 miles on it and is in great condition except recently I have been hearing sort of a rubing noise in the front passenger side wheel.  If I turn the car to the right, the noise stops and it I turn it to the left it gets worse. Going straight it is somewhat load. I have had three different places give me three different opinions. The last said it was the bearings? but the wheel wasn't loose and I shouldn't worry about it. Just wondering if you could explain what you think it is and what I should do. I'm getting tired of getting ripped off by car repair shops. Thank you

Answer
hello
The wayI check wheel bearings is: just the way you say
drive the car about 35 - 45 mph and go left to right
if the noise change to worse in one direction only , it is a bearing. You can also swap the tires (front to rear) and seee if the noise moves. If it stays on the same wheel it is bearing for 100%, IF it moves with a wheel , most like it it is a tire.
Wheel bearing , most like it  will get worst with a time.
so you can wait or just replace it
good luck                 pltech
